I have just installed BT vision with a pair of Comtrend adapters, and now my wireless Logitech keyboard and mouse do not work properly ( act like they are drunk ) , miss letters and work slow . I can turn the problem on and off simply by putting the Comtrend adapters in standy or on , so they are the cause of the problem . The transmitter adapter is 1m from my keyboard and mouse . Any suggestions ?

Hey Steven you have just solved the problem of my logitech keyboard and mouse going nuts when the powerline adapters are on. Didnt even think to check these but turned them off 2 mins ago and all is good again! So now we have 2 people in need of help! Any advice on how to sort this would be great. Another side note, does everybody elses powerline adapters get worringly hot? I might just run a cat5 cable and do away with them.

I seemed to have improved the situation by moving the logitech sender/receiver close to the mouse/keyboard all the same the adapters should not do this should they ?

I have just cured my keyboard by turning the adaptors to standby, for ages I couldnt understand why my keyboard kept missing letters when typing. I am also concerned how hot they get and would like to hear what BT Vision support thinks.

To answer both points-

RF interference from the adapters is almost certainly what is affecting the mentioned keyboards etc.
Please try the following to cure this issue (some suggestions may not be practical for all users)

  • increasing the physical separation of the adapter and the wireless receiver
  • change the channel used by the wireless receiver
  • if the keyboard receiver has a separate power pack try not to place this on the same extension board as the powerline
  • if you are currently using powerline for the PC and the VBox is directly on the hub try changing it round so the VBox is on powerline and the hub is next to the PC (needs a phone point near the PC though)
  • consider if powerline is the best solution for you - are the hub and PC in the same room? - a CAT5 cable could potentially be used instead. We get quite a few calls from customers that use powerline because it's in the kit but do not really require it for their setup

Heat - yes they do get pretty warm, to the point where they feel quite hot to touch (I'd guess around 60'c but I have not tested this). This is normal and the adapters have been tested and passed EU safety standards.

I too suffer from the RF interference on my PC speakers and portable radio and came to this thread via another post about interference. I have emailed BT Vision and just recieved a reply with help page links. I sent another email pointing out I had the sense to try these first and was still seeking advice. No reply for a week. In the meantime I had googled the problem and found this site. I have tried all of the suggestions you made other than the ethernet solution. On of the reasons I went with BT Vision was the Powerline adaptors. Ethernet is not a viable solution for me (distance between hub and V box and installing cat5 cable is not an option as I would have to wreck expensive flooring). Is there a wireless solution? Or would a screened electric socket do the trick?

In the meantime everyone with this problem is potentially breaking the law by transmitting illegal radio waves/interference. Nice one BT. I think the V box and BT Vision is fantastic but I need my PC and my daughter needs her tunes. I am prepared to spend a little to try and keep BT Vision but I dont see why I should when it is BT kit causing the problem. BT needs adaptors that do not interfere and Online customer service needs a good kick up the rear end. After waiting a week I sent another email. One week further on and still no reply. Not good enough.

After waiting for email reply I called the helpdesk. The person who answered claimed not be aware of any noise problems from Powerline adaptors but after I held the handset next to the pc speakers agreed I had a problem. At first they were going to send out new adaptors but then, after confering with a supervisor said an engineer would need to visit. They could not book the visit but someone would call me to arrange. Eight days later I finally recieved a call and the visit was booked. When I asked about the inordinate delay I was told "we are busy". Engineer duly arrived and verfied noise from adaptors. Said he had never heard of problem before (!) and only thing he could think of to fix was to move the Hub to my living room which would entail fitting a telephone extension socket there and making my pc wireless. This sounded like a solution, I can fit the extension and he supplied a wireless dongle for the pc.

With me so far? Well buckle up tightly because now it gets weird. The day after his visit and before I could sort out the extension the noise simply disappeared. Gone, nothing at all. I have done nothing to pc, hub or V box but the noise is gone. Surreal or what? At least I have a solution if the noise comes back.

Folks,

the problems reported here with Comtrend adaptors are due to the high level of radio frequency interference radiated by these units when connected to normal mains wiring in our house. That is to say - when operating "normally" - they manage to jam all kinds of radio traffic on the short wave bands. And that includes broadcasting, amateur radio, commercial users.........and your wireless keyboard/mouse.

The answer is to stop using them. If you need to transfer network signals around your house then use WiFi or an ethernet cable. BT are now removing these units when interference is reported.

BT are well aware that these (and other) adaptors are causing all kinds of inteference, not only to wireless keyboards and mice, but to amature radio (ham radio) equipment as well. Which, so far as I can tell, makes them illegal to use!

How do they know? Because they have received LOTS of complaints from radio enthusiasts and been told to solve the problem (by OFFCOM).

Nice to know you are with a company that blatantly lies to it's customers. Makes you feel warm all over eh?

Thanks,

Paul.

It would be really helpful to know what channels the Comtrend adapters affect most in the 2.4GHz range, or is the RF interference even across all the wifi channels?

The adapter manufacturers have now released a 'notching' tool to allow people to de-select some frequencies on the transmitted signals. Although not supported by BT this may help narrow-spectrum problems with wireless devices - http://www.comtrend.com/links/22$snd.htm Please note that use of this tool is at your own risk, but I believe a normal adapter reset will rectify things if it gets messy.

That sounds useful but I should point out that only the newer 902 adaptors have this notching facility. The older adapters (with no power thru section) do not allow this adjustment. (Just my luck - I've got four of the old style)

You're right about the factory reset. In fact, all of the functions of this tool could be handled simply by accessing the adaptor through it's IP Address in any browser - much like the BT hub config tool.

Firstly, the Comtrends do NOT interfere with 2.4GHz wireless channels, they do not use that band. Rather they interfere with the shortwave radio band, 2-30MHz, and as mentioned this includes the shortwave broadcast stations, amateur radio and a multitude of other services. Your wireless keyboard and mouse use frequencies around 27MHz and as such will be interfered with by the Comtrends.

This issue has been going on for a long time, and although BT under Ofcom's orders will sort out individual cases by replacing the Comtrends with wired ethernet or normal wireless, they are not budging on the fundamental issue in that the units are non-compliant with the European EMC regulations and under the law should be withdrawn from service. If you want to read more on this you should download a copy of the latest EMC Journal, a journal for the professional EMC industry, which you will find at http://www.theemcjournal.com/ This gives an excellent summary of the current situation and how our regulators are failing in their statutory duty.

This provides a useful read (page 3) http://www.trustedreviews.com/networking/review/2009/03/11/Comtrend-PowerGrid-902-Powerline-Ethernet-Adapters/p1

As does the "Flexible frequency configuration" http://www.comtrend.com/na/dbase/upload/PowerGrid902_R1.pdf
